Hanoi is the perfect foil for the seething mass of humanity that is Ho Chi Minh City. With a population of four million and a more genteel style than its southern counterpart, Hanoi is the cultural capital of Vietnam and its heart and soul. A great place to explore on foot, there is a lot to see and do here. Vietnam's capital lies on the banks of the Red River, some 100 kilometres from its mouth. Human settlements here date back as far as the 3rd century BC. Previously known as Thang Long, it was renamed Hanoi in 1831 at a time when Hue was the capital. Large areas of present-day Hanoi were built during the French occupation, reflected in its broad boulevards and French-inspired architecture, which give the city a definite charm.
Budget girl friendly hotels are plentiful in Vietnam. If you’re looking for cheap accommodation that’s clean, safe and conveniently located, Ho Chi Minh & Hanoi are the place to head to. Though if you are looking for something more expensive and luxurious try Norfolk Hotel or Green Plaza Hotel Danang. Norfolk Hotel is a stately four star property located in the heart of Saigon Center in Ho Chi Minh City. Guests staying here will find themselves strategically located for exploring the city, and will be in walking distance of major attractions, such as the bustling Ben Thanh Market, Reunification Palace, Vietnam Historical Museum, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and much, much more. Green Plaza Hotel Danang is close to Han River. Its key location allows easy access to important tourist attractions.
Hanoi is not world famous for its nightlife and some visitors find it outright staid but there are some places worth checking out and – as everywhere – it's all out there if you look for it. Perhaps the most prolific side to Hanoi's after-work activities is its many beer bars selling “bia hoi” (fresh beer) where a glass costs a fraction of what it would in the west. One famous travel guide claims that US$10 will buy you (and hopefully your friends) 100 beers! If the sometimes frenetic pace and crowds of Vietnam starts to get to you this is the perfect antidote. Real live jazz played by Quyen Van Minh, a locally celebrated saxophonist who also happens to own the club and is somewhat of a jazz catalyst. Quyen Van Minh is known as the Godfather of Jazz in Vietnam. Minh has performed in jazz festivals throughout Asia and Europe. Visiting jazz musicians in Vietnam also frequently play with Minh’s Song Hong (Red River) Jazz Bands and at the jazz club. A staple for clubbing Hanoians and a must-try for visitors, Apocalypse Now recently moved downtown and has reputedly lost some of its edge. Smokey and atmospheric it's the sort of place to see people with attitude rather than a friendly watering hole.
